Parkland alumna nominated for Television Academy Foundation Award
Parkland High School graduate Melanie Lowe was nominated for the Television Academy Foundation’s 44th College Television Awards.
The foundation’s annual awards show recognizes and rewards excellence in student-produced programs from colleges across the country.
Winners in the competition will be announced by television stars at the red-carpet awards ceremony April 5, at the Television Academy in North Hollywood, Calif.
Designed to emulate the Emmy® Awards, student entries are judged by Television Academy members.
Criteria for the College Television Awards reflect industry standards of excellence, imagination and innovation.
Lowe, along with classmates at the University of Miami, was nominated in the News category for the Oct. 19, 2023, episode of NewsVision, UMTV’s award-winning campus news program.
Lowe served as a writer on the program, which focused on the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel and how the South Florida community reacted to it.
The project was selected from over 200 entries from colleges nationwide by Television Academy members.
Lowe is currently a junior at the University of Miami majoring in broadcast journalism.
“I’ve been an on-air cast member of NewsVision since my freshman year, where I’ve honed my passion for quality news production,” Lowe said. “I continually create news content for the show, edit scripts and floor manage in the studio during live tapings.
“My work being nominated for a College Television Award is one of my most significant accomplishments in my broadcast career so far.
“To win this award, I would feel reassured as a committed, ethical and talented journalist. I put a significant amount of effort into making sure that my work properly informs the community, and to win this award would be validation of that.”
Attending nominees of the 44th College Television Awards will participate in professional development events with media and industry leaders and a special screening of their projects for Television Academy members before the awards show on April 5.
