LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Liberty wrestling set for D-11 tourney

Brandon Hall always loves this time of year in the wrestling season. It also helps when your home gym is the mecca for wrestling the next two weeks when the District 11 championships get underway Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Hurricanes had a subdued regular season, finishing 8-10 overall, but Hall thinks that some of his guys can make some noise this weekend and in the postseason.

“Well we are looking for all of them to medal and advance but I know that is not realistic,” said Hall of this weekend’s goals. “Objectively, I think three to five guys can medal. Overall we are healthy. Lets hope it continues throughout the post season.”

Liberty won’t have a participant at 160 this postseason and Hall was still trying to figure out what is going to happen at 152, but the rest of the postseason lineup looks like this: Elijah Heimbach (107); Jasiah Pagan (114); JT Solano (121); Ben Miller (127); Julyus Holguin (133); Jose Rodriguez (139); Ben Reid (145); Daniel Rivera (172); Michael Kounoupis (189); Jayden Perez (215) and Dante Morrison (285).

Pagan and Morrison are the only returning medalists for the ‘Canes. Morrison took fifth last year and Pagan finished in sixth.

Hall thinks both should push through along with Heimbach.

“All three have challenging paths but all also have high expectations for themselves,” he said. “I love the individual focus during this time as a coach. Its always clear who is focused and motivated internally during this time. As a fan, the PIAA individual post season is just the best. I may be biased but it doesn’t get much better than a packed Memorial Gymnasium district finals.”

Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. Friday and quarterfinals will start no later than 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s session begins at 9 a.m. with semifinals slated around 10:15 a.m.

Consolation finals take place at 3:30 p.m. and finals for 3A and 2A begin at 4:45 p.m. on two mats.

Jose Ramirez and the Hurricanes are hoping to have deep runs in the upcoming postseason tournaments.
