Lambert, Glaser move on for NHS
The second District XI girls individual wrestling championship wrapped up Sunday evening at Easton Middle School with Northampton sending two competitors, Mylea Lambert and Dani Glaser, on to next week’s regionals at Quakertown.
District XI is only allocated three qualification slots at each weight class and because schools are not split into 2A and 3A divisions for the girls, it’s a significant achievement to advance.
Lambert, a senior, was seeking her second straight district title. She started with a quick pin of Catty’s Ashlie Giron in the quarterfinals. Her semifinal match against Chloe Straub of PM West was a 22-4 tech fall, but Straub’s 4 points were on a dangerous nearfall to start the second period that Lambert fought through.
The final at 155 was a rematch of the EPC title match against Emmaus’ Olivya Kroope and it followed a similar script: a scoreless first period, followed by a reversal by Kroope in the second, and the eventual pin by the Hornet junior.
“I really thought she was going to dominate. When she was on top she was in control and did two tilts. On the second tilt, she got in bad position and got reversed. In EPC’s she was pinned by an illegal move (3/4 Nelson). This one, she kind of hung her head and got taken over in a half. I’m optimistic that when they meet next week, it’s going to be a different story,” explained head coach Joe Tocci.
Last year, Glaser received an invitation to regionals due to a lack of wrestlers at 235 in other districts. This year, she earned her spot by taking out the athlete that ended her 2024 season, Lily Decker of Pleasant Valley with a takedown with 9 seconds left in the consolation final to win the consolation final.
Glaser’s only loss in the tournament was to defending state champion Brenda Banks of Panther Valley in the semifinals.
Glaser spoke about the match, “I haven’t wrestled that girl since last year at regionals. I knew I could beat her. I’ve worked hard on not dropping to me knees and being on my toes. I was able to get the escape at the start of the third period when I needed it and then got the takedown to win.”
The K-Kids had two other placewinners on Sunday. Seniors Jaida Onyango and Camryn Birosik both made the final session with Onyango finishing fifth and Birosik sixth.
Onyango reached the semifinals before dropping a 8-3 decision to second seed Saige Rittenhouse of Parkland. She had the bad fortune to face top-seeded Juliette Trout of Pleasant Valley in her consolation semifinal and that pin took her out of a chance to wrestle for a place in regionals.
Birosik rebounded from a first-round loss to score back-to-back pins in consolations in matches where she was trailing.
Overall, Northampton finished 9th out of 28 schools in the team standings with 83.5 points. Parkland and Easton each had four finalists and created a two-way race for the team title which the Rovers won 189.5 to 179.5.
