Haflich wins District 11 gold
Liberty’s girls’ wrestling team came away with a fourth-place team finish at the District 11 tournament over the weekend at Easton Area Middle School.
The Hurricanes had three finalists, but only came away with one champion, as Gracie Haflich (170) won her second straight district title.
Haflich knocked off Bryce Snyder of Palisades 4-1 to win the gold medal.
Doniya Anwari (130) and Addyson Munro (235) lost by falls in the finals.
Anwari was upended by Easton’s Aubre Krazer in 2:31 and Munro was pinned by defending state champion Brenda Banks of Panther Valley in 1:07.
Luisyana Ortiz (136) took third for the Hurricanes with a 4-2 decision over Sam Eisenhauer of Pine Grove and Ellie Rumbalski (190) rounded out Liberty’s medalists with a fall over Northampton’s Camryn Birosik in 3:28 to take fifth.
“Our goal all season has been to stay focused on the techniques we’ve drilled in practice and apply the lessons learned from previous matches,” said Liberty head coach Brian Burzynski. “ I stress personal improvement and focus on performance-based goals. This rise in ability has presented both a challenge and a motivator for the Liberty team. It has pushed our wrestlers and coaches to work even harder to stay ahead of the curve.”
Freedom finished in eighth place at the tournament and had two finalists, but both settled for silver medals.
Jedah Canty (136) lost by fall in 2:35 to Olivia Capra of Easton and Alexis Horvath (148) was downed by Pine Grove’s Eve Kurtz by fall in 5:01.
Anaya Velez (170) finished in fourth for the Pates and Alyssa Laubach (130) rounded out the Freedom medalists with a sixth place finish after having to forfeit her medal round bout.
Bethlehem Catholic’s Anna Truscott (100) was the lone medalist for the Hawks taking sixth.
The girls tournament now moves forward to this weekend’s Southeast Regional tournament at Quakertown.
