Boys set to take on PME

Whitehall head boys’ basketball coach Jeff Jones is proud that is team hasn’t lost two games in a row all season.

As the Zephyrs begin the District 11 Class 6A playoffs this weekend, Jones is confident the trend can continue.

Fourth-seeded Whitehall will meet fifth-seeded Pocono Mountain East in a Class 6A quarterfinal round game in Easton Saturday at 1 p.m.

Whitehall (18-6) enters districts coming off a 55-52 loss to Pocono Mountain West in an East Penn Conference (EPC) semifinal game. The Zephyrs have won 9 of their last 11 and 16 of their last 20 games.

Jones knows his team has to turn its attention to seniors Rayshawn Harris (team-leading 16.5 points per game) and Parker Scoz (9.3 ppg), who have paced Pocono Mountain East all season. The Cardinals (17-6), who have won seven of their last nine, will enter the postseason off a 50-48 loss to Liberty in an EPC quarterfinal.

“East has a balanced team with two all-league players in Harris and Scoz,” said Jones. “They proved their improvement throughout the season with a tough, last-second loss at Liberty in the league playoffs.

“We need to stop guard penetration and (senior center) AJ (Hines) will need to nullify Scoz inside. They switch defenses and will pressure full court. We’ll see how the West loss affects us. I think it will motivate us to play hard and have a chance at the district playoffs and getting a PIAA bid. We haven’t lost two in a row all season, so I think we’ll be ready.”

Junior Seth Hoderewski, who is averaging 9.67 points per game, sees his team ready to take the next step and beyond. Hines leads the team averaging 16.8 points per game.

“I think our group of guys are really excited about Saturday,” boasted Hoderewski. “Knowing we have put in the work this whole year to get to this point, we a we want more. We want to win this whole thing.

“The West game was a bummer, but next couple of days we get back to work motivated after that loss. Potentially seeing West again and seeing some other good teams, we are mentally and physically prepared to go far and play basketball in March. We have a guy that can go off on any given night and we ride high off AJ’s play. We are definitely ready and excited about the upcoming game.”
