Boys hope to advance
Catasauqua’s Jacob Ramos has had a banner year with a 19-9 record at 285, but the senior admittedly is a little nervous about the Class 2A tournament at Freedom High School this weekend.
He doesn’t want a repeat of last year.
“I got sick and wrestled my worst ever,” he said. “I am nervous about going into the tournament. I don’t want to happen what happened last year. But I can’t think about last year.
“I have worked so hard this year to get to this weekend. Still, I am confident and very excited. I believe I have a good shot, and I just have to go out and execute.”
Ramos is one of three seniors in the Rough Riders’ lineup along with Jonathan Rizzo (133), John Cordon-Pinto (145) and Braden Bartholomew (215).
Head coach Jonathan Reed expects his seniors to excel.
“We’re looking forward to our seniors having a great final district tournament,” said Reed.
“Jacob Ramos has been wrestling great and looking for him to continue that into this weekend’s district tournament. Jonathan Cordon-Pinto has been working hard and looking to wrestle his best tournament of his career. Braden Bartholomew has more wins this year than in his entire career and hopes to get a few more for a chance to qualify for the regional tournament. Jonathan Rizzo has always given it his all and will do it one last time in his final district tournament.”
Reed also is confident junior Gavin Hacker (121), who missed last year’s postseason due to injuries, can make his mark. Other wrestlers in the tournament will be Jayce Perez (114), Aydan Frisby, (127), Brenden Takacs (139), Kaylan Peters (152), Nikoloz Kemashvili (160), Donovan Torres (172), and Eli Sandt (189).
Reed is optimistic some of his wrestlers will continue their seasons. The Rough Riders have seven wrestlers in the district JV tournament with most of them advancing to the second day.
“Our goal is to get as many kids to the placement rounds,” said Reed. “We think we can get some to the regionals next week.
“It’s the last hoorah for our talented group of seniors and hoping they can put the tournament of their careers together and extend their wrestling season another week.”
