PHS girls wrestlers win tournament
Following a first place finish at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championships, the Parkland High School girls wrestling team got back into action with a midweek conference dual road match on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and then came out on top of the Panther Brawl tournament at Strath Haven High School last Saturday.
The Trojans defeated East Stroudsburg South 60-18 and, three days later, placed first at the Panther Brawl.
Parkland won 10 of the 13 bouts in the victory over the Cavaliers, including six forfeit wins and four pins.
ESS began the match with a pin at 100 pounds and then Lily Snook followed with a pin at 106 to tie the score. The two teams once again traded pins at 112 and 118 pounds as Teagan Tremba earned a pin at 118 pounds.
Sydney Laputka gave her team a lead with a pin at 124 pounds before the Cavaliers once again tied the score with a pin at 130. The Trojans took the lead for good then when Victoria Lasagna recorded a pin at 136 pounds and then Parkland had six straight forfeit victories, including Angelina Spachman, Carissa Kalmar, Natalie Deutsch, Lizkarla Grullon Vasquez, Chloe Grady and Kendall Solenske.
In the Panther Brawl, the Trojans finished with 227.5 team points, well ahead of the second-place team, Emmaus, who ended with 163.5 points. There were five different wrestlers that won their respective classes, including Payton Ocasio (112), Saige Rittenhouse (118), Spachman (142), Jayla Adomo (148) and Grullon Vasquez (190). Snook (106), Abigail Taylor (124) and Solenske (235) finished second overall. Elysa Lacerda placed third overall at 100 pounds, along with Tremba at 112 and Lasagna at 136. Leila Palmieri (130) and Carissa Kalmar both ended the day in fourth.
Parkland hosted Pocono Mountain East in the final regular season dual match on Wednesday and then will compete in the District 11 team tournament at Easton Area Middle School on Sunday, Feb. 16.
