NWL swimmers prepare for postseason meets
Northwestern Lehigh has three swimmers competing locally to gain spots in the District 11 swimming and diving championships early next month with hopes of earning a spot in the PIAA championships at Bucknell University in mid-March.
Hunter Slaski and Aiden Braadt swim with Parkland High School and Olivia Wozniak swims with William Allen High School since Northwestern does not have a swimming team. Slaski’s younger brother, Hayden, competes in diving with the Parkland team. The four do not garner any points for the teams they swim with, but they do get credit for their times, which go toward qualifying for postseason meets at the district and state level.
Hunter Slaski, a senior, won gold at districts last season in the 100-yard butterfly and took silver in the 200-yard freestyle. The results were good enough to send him to the state championships in the two events.
The most recent outing for Hunter Slaski was in the Cedar Crest Classic at Parkland High School this past weekend where he finished 11th in the 100-yard butterfly and 15th in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 50.58 seconds in the 100 freestyle represented a personal best for him. This season, Hunter Slaski has already qualified for districts in the 50, 100, and 500-yard freestyle events and in the 200-yard IM.
Fellow senior Aiden Braadt also swam in the Cedar Crest Classic and finished with a season best time of 211.82 in the 200-yard individual medley. He also swam in the 100-yard breaststroke and finished with a time of 1:09.62 just off his season best time of 1:09.65 that he set in a meet against Nazareth.
In December, Braadt set his personal best time of 23.97 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle swimming against East Stroudsburg South to qualify for districts in the event. When not competing in events with Parkland High School, Braadt swims with the Parkland Swim Club.
Wozniak is a freshman and in addition to swimming with Allen High School, she competes with the Parkland Aquatic Club, the Kutztown Dolphins and the Middle Atlantic Zone Team. Competing recently in the PAAC Groundhog Meet, Wozniak set a personal best time of 2:05.72 in the 200-yard freestyle, qualifying her for districts. Wozniak has also qualified for districts in the 100 and 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard IM.
In diving, Hayden Slaski took gold at districts last season with a six-dive score of 309.55 and went on to place 15th at states in his freshman season. In his sophomore season, Slaski has a season high score of 242.40 for a six-dive event, which he set against Nazareth.
