Emmaus girls wrestlers win final two matches

The Emmaus High School girls wrestling team finished the regular season on a high note by winning its final two matches.

The Hornets defeated Northampton 42-33 e last Monday, Feb. 3, and followed that with a 45-27 victory over Palisades Monday.

In the victory against the Kids, Emmaus squeaked out the won seven of the 13 bouts, with six pins and one forfeit win. The Hornets fell behind to start the match before Katherine Soto-Acuna and Peyton Schneck earned back-to-back pins at 235 and 100 pounds, respectively, to take a 12-6 lead.

The Kids won three bouts in a row, to go ahead 24-12.

Emmaus answered with three straight pins as Erin Bechtel, Brynn Koberlein and Kadence Yannotti all had pins at 124, 130 and 136 pounds to take a 30-24 lead. Haily Laible picked up a pin at 148 pounds to extend her team’s advantage. The teams traded forfeits the last two bouts with Jocelyn Vargas ending the match with a forfeit victory at 170 pounds.

In the win over the Pirates, Emmaus won eight of the 13 bouts, including four pins, three forfeit wins and a decision. Palisades kept it close thanks to four of bonus points as five of their wins came via pins.

Shadeilyz Castro-Ruiz opened the match with a forfeit victory at 100 pounds and then Schneck earned a pin at 106 pounds. The Pirates responded with back-to-back pins to tie the score before Bechtel had a pin at 124 pounds to take back the lead.

Palisades recorded a 6-2 decision at 130 and a pin at 136 to take its first lead of the match at 21-18, but Emmaus q answered with a 7-1 decision by Ariana Koberlein at 142 pounds and then two straight pins at 148 and 155 pounds by Laible and Olivya Kroope as the Hornets went back out in front 33-21.

After a Palisades pin at 170 to pull within 33-27, Petra Perez and Soto-Acuna finished off the match with forfeit wins at 190 and 235 pounds, respectively.

Emmaus will compete in the District 11 individual tournament this Sunday at Easton Area Middle School. The Regional tournament will be the following Sunday, Feb. 23, at Quakertown High School, before PIAA Championships in Hershey March 6-8.
