Emmaus boys swimmers take CC Classic title
The dual meet season ended for the Emmaus boys swim team with a 141-42 win over the Freedom Patriots recently. Hornet swimmers also competed in the Cedar Crest Classic at Parkland High School over the weekend where they won the team title in the nine-team competition.
Against the Patriots, Emmaus grabbed the top three finishes in six different individual events, including three freestyle heats.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Matt Sirignano, a sophomore, had an impressive showing with a time of 23.38 seconds with classmate Carson Mosel on his tail, turning in a personal best time of 23.48 seconds.
The 100-yard freestyle went to senior Brady King with a time of 49.89 seconds. Joe Lyons took second and Goob Schaeffer finished third. The 200-yard freestyle was a battle between junior Aaron Kenny and sophomore Carter Smith with Kenny edging Smith by 0.49 seconds. Ridley Hartman took third with a time of 1:59.34.
The Hornets had another sweep in the 500-yard freestyle with Griffin Messenlehner in first with a time of 5:17.48, Carter Smith (5:25.70) second and Evan LaRussa turning in a season best time of 5:40.63 to place third.
Emmaus also swept the 100-yard backstroke, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley.
The closest of the three events was the breaststroke as the top three finishers were all within one second of each other and the top two finishers both turned in personal best times with Brennan Smith finishing in 1:13.14 and Evan Walker turning in a new high mark of 1:14.06 for second. Nate Peters completed the sweep with a season best time of 1:14.13.
Sirignano had his second top finish of the day in the 100-yard backstroke with a personal best time of 1:03.59. Reese Wunderler took second at 1:08.10 and Brady Hazlett was third with a mark of 1:12.55. Both Wunderler and Hazlett posted season best times. In the 200-yard IM, Graham Lovett was the top finisher followed by Will Reichart and Peters.
Parker Gamler won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.59, just 1.67 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Freedom.
In relays, Emmaus took first and second place in all three events.
In the 200-yard medley relay, Messenlehner, Lovett, Brady King, and Evan Lovett teamed up for a time of 1:47.53. Bryce King, Julian Vlaeminck, Roman Herman, and Lovett won the event with a mark of 1:34.33 and Herman, Kenny, Brennan Smith, and Carter Smith had a time of 3:33.71 in the 400-yard freestyle to take the top spot.
Emmaus diver Doug Cornish finished second to Freedom’s Cody Smith.
At the Cedar Crest Classic, Messenlehner won the 100-yard freestyle as he bested Parkland’s Jacob Piccini with a time of 47.20, just ahead of Piccini’s 47.92, which was a personal best. Brady King also took a top individual finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.19, just ahead of Messenlehner’s 52.13.
Emmaus finished third in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. In the 200 freestyle, Emmaus’ team of Lyons, Vlaeminck, Lovett, and Brady King were just 1.17 seconds behind first-place LaSalle and 1.12 seconds behind Upper Dublin for second.
In the team standings, Emmaus had a score of 460 with LaSalle (422.5) second and Parkland (393) third.
In the season standings for the East Penn Conference, Parkland won the league with a perfect 9-0 league record and a 14-0 overall record. Emmaus (8-1, 14-4) took second.
Next up for the Hornets is the Last Chance Meet on Feb. 15, which gives them one final time to compete in their home pool and to qualify for districts.
