Soccer Scholar Athletes honored

The Lehigh Valley Soccer Scholar Athlete banquet was recently held with Parkland’s Caleb Daniels and Central’s Delia McMullen each winning top honors.

Entering the Lehigh Valley Soccer Hall of Fame this year were Al Haddid and Tom Hickey.

Hadid has spent his entire adult life involved in some way or another in the Lehigh Valley soccer landscape:

As a player, Al played at Salisbury High School, Penn State Hazleton and played for over 44 years in the Lehigh Valley on various soccer teams.

As an administrator, he took over the SPYA soccer program in 1990 and grew it from 150 kids to 1,500 kids playing soccer in the Parkland Community.

As an official, he became a referee to join his son as he went to ref club games.

He was also a coach - spending over 20 years coaching both boys and girl’s teams as his kids grew.

Hickey was asked to coach youth soccer for the YMCA in Catasauqua since they knew he was a soccer player. While there, he coached U-6, U-8 and U-10 boys and girls. That was how he started his coaching career.

After coaching the youth for the YMCA, Tom started to coach for Tri-Boro Soccer. While there he coached U-12, U-14 and U-17 boys.

From there, Tom helped start the Lehigh Valley Select program. With Lehigh Valley Select, Tom coached the U-12 and U-14 boys select teams.

In 2004, he started coaching Tri-Boro’s girls teams U-12 to U-18. The girls on these teams were from seven different high schools.

Currently, Tom coaches the goalies on the Allen High School team.
