Becahi girls hoops head to EPC finals

Bethlehem Catholic’s girls basketball team is heading to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference final after defeating Nazareth, 51-42, in an EPC semifinal on Feb. 10 at PPL Center, Allentown.

Becahi had a healthy 30-18 lead at halftime during which the Hawks stayed on the court instead of meeting in the locker room.

“I want to do what’s working,” said Bethlehem Catholic coach Arnold Alleyne. “It’s a new arena, new gym, and I think, for us, if I’ve got to spend 10 minutes drawing up the same thing on the board again, I’m wasting time when they could be on the floor. My thing is get more acclimated to the floor, get shots up, and stick to what’s working.”

Nazareth turned up its defense in the third quarter and closed the gap to six points.

Renee Wells had a steal after a score, Carly Brown sank two free throws, and Alexa Davis drained a 3-pointer for the Blue Eagles with 10 seconds left in the third.

“After we called a timeout, I told them to stick to the game plan, stay together, execute our defense, and it’s gonna work itself out,” said Alleyne. “We have the advantage.”

Becahi center Mikaila Brooks started the fourth-quarter scoring with two of her 18 points as teammates found the 6’2 Golden Hawk sophomore under the basket all night.

In the second EPC girls basketball semifinal, Parkland faced off against Emmaus.

“I’m probably gonna watch the whole game,” Alleyne said. “Those are two strong teams, and I respect them both, and I look forward to seeing who wins the game.”

Emmaus was the winner, 57-44, over the Trojans.

The Hornets and the Hawks will meet for the EPC championship at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at PPL Center.
