BC wins state team title

Every championship is different, but Bethlehem Catholic has a knack for winning on the wrestling mat.

The Hawks won their fourth straight PIAA 3A crown over the weekend, following a 44-28 victory over Nazareth.

It was a rematch of the District 11 3A team championship and the Hawks widened the gap even more in this rematch to claim another state title in their trophy case.

Head coach Mike Cole understands the importance of tradition at Beca and after being on the sidelines the past two seasons, Cole has kept their winning standards on par.

“It is a good feeling keeping our strong tradition going,” said Cole. “We are pretty banged up right now, so it took a strong team effort to make this year’s championship happen. It probably doesn’t look that way from the outside but it certainly was a challenging task from within.”

For the likes of seniors Marco Frinzi, Charlie Scanlan, Shane McFillin, James Deluise and Ryder Campbell, winning a fourth straight PIAA crown is something they’ll always remember.

Cole knows how special it must be for a senior class to walk away with a state championship each season and it’s fitting that this tight knit class battled their way to another gold medal.

“I am happy for them,” Cole said of the senior class. “They have been together since they were in kindergarten. They are a really close group of kids and great leaders on the team. They are significant contributors to a great culture and strong team environment.”

Becahi held off Connellsville 29-23 in the semifinals before witnessing the fourth straight all District 11 final in the team tournament. After beating Nazareth 36-24 in the district championship, the Hawks picked up more bonus points in their eight wins this time around to give them an easier ride to the crown.

The constant improvement Cole looks for every day in practice translated to another perfect weekend and season for the undefeated Hawks (17-0).

“I firmly believe you reset expectations every year and you base those expectations on the individuals on the team and challenge all of them to overachieve,” he said. “If they are committed to that, all will be fine. Maybe we win or maybe we lose. But, overachievement is what I believe we benchmark ourselves against.”
