NORTH WHITEHALL Churches prepare for ‘Souper Bowl’

BY SUSAN RUMBLE

Special to The Press

On Feb. 9, the day of the Super Bowl football game, churches are using the occasion to collect cans of soup, other food items and donations for local people.

St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1415 Rising Sun Road, Laurys Station, will take an offering for the Lehigh Conference of Churches kitchen at the former Dubbs Memorial UCC, Allentown.

The Conference Kitchen offers three meals a day, five days a week, to people in need.

Some may not even have a bowl of soup to eat without the meals provided by the Conference Kitchen.

St. John’s welcomes canned soup and other nonperishable food contributions, plus cash gifts to keep the conference program going.

The church will have a time for fellowship during a soup luncheon after the 10:15 a.m. Feb. 9 worship service.

Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, will also have its Souper Bowl celebration on Feb. 9.

Organizers expect to collect a large amount of canned soup for the Northern Lehigh Food Bank.

The church always has some fun that day with a contest to guess the winner of the Super Bowl football game and a tailgate lunch for everyone to enjoy after the 10:30 a.m. service.

Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, will have its annual “Loud Offering” on Feb. 9.

Big cook pots will be passed through the pews to collect coins and other cash donations for the Parkland CARES Food Pantry and the church’s overall Feed the Hungry ministry.

The Journeymen group invites every one to play cornhole in the Family Life Center 6-8 p.m. Feb. 12 and 26.

Snacks will be provided.

The Journeymen is the men’s ministry group of Union Lutheran which aims to provide help through the church community in any ways needed, such as cash donations or helping members with projects.

Union Lutheran Pastor Gordon Camp offers thoughts for the new year.

“Let us cultivate our overwhelming service of gratitude for the blessings in our lives,” Camp said.

“May we cherish one another and those who stand by us in difficult times.

“Let’s strive to uplift someone each day.”
