Hesener, Spachman earn EPC gold

After a regular season loss to Easton, the Parkland girls wrestling team was looking for revenge Saturday at the East Penn Conference Championships.

The Trojans got it, avenging that loss by beating Easton for the team title Saturday at Liberty High School. Parkland crowned two champions, sent four wrestlers to first-place matches and saw seven wrestlers earn medals at the event.

“Last year Parkland won EPCs,” said Trojan junior Angelina Spachman after winning the 142-pound title Saturday. “This year we’re really close with Easton. We lost a dual to Easton. If we win here it’s kind of like redemption.”

Spachman and senior Ella Hesener both won titles for Parkland Saturday, while teammates Lily Snook and Lizkarla Grullon Vasquez finished second and Saige Rittenhouse, Payton Ocasio and Natalie Deutch placed third.

Hesener, a senior, won her opening bout by fall before a major decision in semifinals sent her to the 100-pound title bout where she was looking to earn her second league title in two years.

Hesener put Nazareth’s Chelsea Dressler on her back in 1:43 to not only win the gold medal, but also earn her 99th career win and second consecutive league title.

“I had a few snags,” said Hesener. “I got out of position a few times. It ended up paying off at the end and I’m pretty excited. I fought out of my positions well. I did put myself in some bad ones but I fought out of them and I figured it out.”

The second annual league tournament allowed the wrestlers to see some of the competition they’ll get in three weeks at the District 11 Championships.

“It’s almost a preview [of districts], because most of these teams are going to be here plus a few others,” said Hesener. “You know a lot of people here so I think it’s a fun environment for girls.”

Hesener looks to finish off her career with some more titles. She’s a defending district champ and was fourth in the state last season.

Spachman pinned her first two opponents in the first period Saturday to earn a place in the title match, where she pinned Nazareth’s Addison Greger in 3:11.

“I was trying to get our team points, so I was really trying to get pins,” said Spachman.

She was also determined to improve on her finishes at recent tournaments. After taking third place in all three individual tournaments her team entered during the 2024-25 season, Spachman was looking to move up the podium at leagues.

“This whole season I’ve been getting bronze at tournaments, at North Penn, Gov Mifflin and Midwinter Mayhem,” she said.

Her semifinal win over Stroudsburg’s Elsia Trotter guaranteed a top-two finish for Spachman.

Last season, while wrestling at Northwestern Lehigh, Spachman finished second at districts but did not advance through regionals. This winter she’s looking to improve on that performance.

“I want to place at districts,” she said. “Then regionals, I just want to make it to states. And at states I just want to make it on the podium.”

Parkland’s Snook, a sophomore, reached the 106-pound title bout with pins in her first two matches. She fell to Easton’s Morgan Hyland in the first-place match to earn a silver medal.

Grullon Vasquez (190) also pinned her first two opponents before running into Easton’s Maura Case in the finals and falling by a 4-3 decision.

Ocasio (118) lost her quarterfinal match to eventual silver medalist Keziah Wilson of Pocono Mountain East before wrestling back with three straight wins to take third place.

Rittenhouse (112) and Deutsch (155) won their opening bouts but losses in the semifinals sent them to the consolation semifinals, where both won to earn a spot in the third-place match. All three Parkland wrestlers that reached their third-place match came away victorious.
