Girls wrestling falls to tough Easton team

Wrestling fans at Pete Schneider Gymnasium on Tuesday saw the only dual meet between Northampton and Easton this year as the two schools’ girls teams wrapped up their regular seasons.

The Rovers, along with Parkland, got an early start into girls wrestling, launching their programs a few years before it was a PIAA sanctioned sport. Easton is currently ranked sixth in PA and they showed why as they knocked off the K-Kids 48-27.

On Senior Night, it was only fitting that the two seniors who also competed last year, Mylea Lambert and Jaida Onyango, scored 1-minute pins in their final appearances in their home gym.

At 118, sophomore Taylor Sipel won by fall in 1:01.

Emilee Gaughran claimed the only match that went the distance by hanging on to a 5-4 decision at 100 pounds after scoring the only takedown of the bout just 14 seconds in.

Dani Glaser received a forfeit at 235.

As the sport grows and as the program develops at Northampton, results are secondary to improvement and effort. Head coach Joe Tocci was pleased with how his team performed against a foe that could have been intimidating. He said, “I’m proud of them. I was very excited their performance. I thought we wrestled very well. They showed a lot of heart wrestling against some of the best in the state.”

The team finishes their second campaign with a 11-7 dual meet record after going 4-4 the previous year.

They will next turn their attention to the individual post season when the District XI tournament starts next Sunday at Easton Middle School. There is no separation between classes 2A and 3A for the girls and only the top three placers at each weight class will advance to regionals.
