Girls top Southern Lehigh and NDGP
Catasauqua’s girls basketball team started this week with a statement win over Notre Dame-Green Pond on Feb. 3 followed by a regular-season ending victory over Southern Lehigh on Feb. 4 at Catasauqua.
Feb. 4 was also Senior Night, and the Rough Riders honored Katrina Mullin, wearing “We love our senior” T-shirts as Mullin’s parents Angela and Thomas escorted the Catty senior through her teammates and onto center court to the applause of teammates, coaches, friends, and fans.
“Being the only senior didn’t really factor into the season until tonight,” Mullin said. “The team felt more like one as a whole. This was the only year I really felt good in basketball even though I’ve only done two. It was really special. I love that everyone did everything. They all wore shirts. I didn’t have to pick littles. It just felt really nice, and I had all my family and friends here. I loved it. It was honestly a night to remember.”
Catty’s 56-43 victory over Southern Lehigh was the seventh consecutive win for the Rough Riders on Senior Night.
“They were really aggressive,” said Mullin. “They just kept fouling, but we handled it well, in my opinion.”
Catasauqua led, 37-14, at halftime.
Hailey Jenkins led all players with 26 points, and Kaylin Stewart had 22 points against the Spartans.
On Feb. 3, Catasauqua handed Notre Dame-Green Pond its second loss of the season, 43-35.
“What happened was we came out and played much better defense in the second half, and it showed,” said Catasauqua head coach Tara Belfield. “Now we’re getting steals, they’re not making shots, we’re getting rebounds, and we’re going. The defense they played was absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t have asked for more from them.
“I’ve only been here at Catty for one year, but that was absolutely our best win so far. In my short coaching career here, and from what I understand, Catty hasn’t won [at Notre Dame] in a really, really long time, so it meant a lot. I don’t think the girls even understand what they did. I think Hailey, being the older player, might have understood, but the other girls are freshmen so I don’t think they understand the impact.”
Catty outscored Notre Dame, 15-8, in the fourth quarter on a combination of points from Jenkins and Stewart.
This Friday, the Rough Riders will compete in a quarterfinal of the Colonial League Girls Basketball Tournament.
“I’m looking forward to continuing as a team,” said Mullin. “We’re doing really well all together, and as long as we keep up what we’ve done in the last seven games, we’ll make it really far.”
