Falcons look to clinch CL playoff spot

As of the start of this week, the Colonial League boys basketball standings had 10 teams all with a mathematical shot at filling the eight playoff spots in the league tournament.

Salisbury is one of the teams on the bubble, but the Falcons also control their own destiny with three games remaining this week.

Notre Dame of Green Pond (14-1 Colonial) and Northwestern Lehigh (14-1) are the only two teams to have clinched playoff spots. Saucon Valley (11-4) is on the verge of locking up the South Division, which puts the Panthers into the postseason.

Bangor (11-5) and Wilson (10-6) are also in good shape. Salisbury and Lehighton are both 9-6 with the Indians holding the tiebreaker thanks to a win over the Falcons earlier in the year. Catasauqua and Southern Lehigh, both 8-7, can help themselves a lot since both play Salisbury this week.

Coming into the week, the Falcons hold the tiebreaker over both teams thanks to having beaten them already. A second win over both would guarantee a playoff spot for Salisbury.

Losses to either or both of their division rivals would make things interesting, and it could come down to Salisbury’s season finale against Palisades with the Pirates holding just a 2-13 league record this season. Palmerton (6-10) has the final opportunity, but the Blue Bombers need wins over Northwestern Lehigh and Northern Lehigh (4-10) and a lot of help from other teams to reach the postseason.

In terms of the District 11 4A playoffs, Salisbury has clinched a spot.

The Falcons helped themselves over the past week with a 60-33 win over Moravian Academy and a 57-49 win Catasauqua on Friday. Against the Lions, Salisbury held a 26-21 lead at halftime before starting to pull away in the third quarter to open a 9-point lead going into the final quarter. The combination of Salisbury’s defense flexing its muscles and the offense posting 21 points pushed the Falcons to the lopsided win.

Salisbury had four players finish in double digits in scoring with Bryan Gonzalez leading the team with 11 points. Steven Lozada, Drew Petrie, and Julian Makhoul all scored 10 for the Falcons.

The only blemish on last week’s schedule was a 53-40 loss at Saucon Valley.

The regular season schedule wraps up this week with a game at Catasauqua before the home finale against Southern Lehigh tonight. The season wraps up Friday night at Palisades.
