Respectfully Yours: Soft skills important in job interview

Dear Jacquelyn,

I know soft skills play an important role during a job interview. What specific behaviors are employers looking for?

Dear Reader,

When it comes to getting hired, employers look at your behavior and mannerisms as carefully as they do your technical skills and experience.

It’s important to make sure you are at the top of your game and implement strategies that will help you stand out from the competition.

A person will often get hired because they are well-versed, informed and willing to learn. Highlighting your ability to communicate effectively is essential.

How well you speak and listen will be revealed throughout your interactions with your interviewer. Keep in mind that any communication, even a brief email confirming your interview time, must be free of errors.

It’s essential to showcase your abilities, solid work ethic and genuine interest in the job. Demonstrate this by doing your homework in advance.

Understand the company mission and who the company caters to as a client. In other words, show your research skills and ask questions.

It’s also important to understand that employers want to know that they are hiring people who work well with a variety of people and can help bring out the best in others. Be prepared to offer examples of successful collaborative efforts you have been involved in with co-workers and clients. Your objective is to help let them know that you are a team player.

Employers also want to feel confident in your ability to switch gears and actively seek opportunities to learn new skills. Your job description is a template to follow. It’s your responsibility to continue to add value to your position through continued growth. Let your interviewer know you are ready and able to step up to the challenge.

Soft skills are a set of signals you send that show respect and genuine interest. These nuances distinguish you personally and professionally when executed with genuine enthusiasm and sincerity.

The right attitude is often more impressive than the years of experience.

Respectfully Yours,

Jacquelyn
