Liberty girls top Bethlehem Cath.
Liberty’s girls basketball team cashed-in on free throws while two of Bethlehem Catholic’s starters fouled out of an overtime contest won by the Hurricanes, 55-51, on Jan. 21 at Liberty.
It was the second meeting for the city rivals this season with the first match won by Liberty, 41-38, on Dec. 2 at Becahi.
Last week’s game featured three tied quarters for the evenly matched teams.
With 26 seconds left in regulation, Becahi had possession, setting up for the final shot until Liberty’s Anijah Davis forced a steal that went out of bounds with two seconds remaining, ultimately leading to overtime.
Becahi guard Leah Ault and Beca forward Palin Coleman had fouled out late in the fourth quarter.
Liberty guard Ava Kopetskie scored the first points in overtime, and Davis was left alone underneath to add two more points for the ‘Canes.
Becahi’s Daviana Jones scored all of the Hawks’ nine points in overtime, but Kopetskie finished off the game with four free throws.
Kopetskie tied the game with two foul shots at halftime, and Kendall Medina and Kopetskie combined for five points to start the third quarter, but Coleman tied the game on five straight points of her own.
A pass from Becahi center Mekhyla Britt to Kendall Nickischer to Coleman put the Hawks ahead, but Tula Sobrinski’s 3-pointer and another from Kopetskie put the Hurricanes back on top, 36-32.
Scoring stalled in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but Liberty found its footing first to maintain its lead.
Liberty will meet another city rival on Jan. 30 at Freedom.
