3 girls take gold
Liberty performance at the East Penn Conference girls’ wrestling championship over the weekend might be a preview of what’s to come for the Hurricanes this postseason.
The ‘Canes crowned three champions and medaled six wrestlers in total to come away with a third place team finish with 135.5 points, falling behind team champion Parkland (154) and Easton (138.5).
Doniya Anwari (130), Gracie Haflich (170) and Addyson Munro (235) each pinned their opponents in the finals to win gold.
Anwari registered a fall over Easton’s Olivia Capra in 2:26, while Haflich pinned Neysa Lynch of Pocono Mountain East in 1:53. Munro took care of Nazareth’s Brianna Gold in 17 seconds. All three Hurricanes won every bout of the tournament by fall.
“I was extremely proud of the team’s performance at the EPC tournament,” said head coach Brian Burzynski. “Despite facing challenges like injuries and illnesses common this time of year, we demonstrated resilience and determination. The competitive schedule we’ve faced throughout the season clearly prepared us for the challenges of this tournament.”
Luisyana Ortiz (136) reached the finals, but lost to Easton’s Aubre Krazer by fall in 2:23 to settle for silver. Ellie Rumbalski (190) took third for Liberty, while Kierha Castillo (124) finished in fourth.
Liberty still has dual meets against Freedom on Wednesday and Saturday against Nazareth before they get ready for the individual postseason on February 16.
With the results they witnessed from the EPC tournament, expect the Hurricanes to have a strong showing when the real postseason gets underway.
“The EPC tournament provides valuable experience against top-tier competition, many of whom we’ll encounter again at the district level,” said Burzynski.” While it offers a good gauge of our current standing, we understand the postseason will bring new challenges from wrestlers outside our league. We’ll approach districts with the same focus and determination to continue our success.”
Freedom finished ninth at the event, placing three wrestlers in total with Jedah Canty (136) and Alexis Horvath (148) taking third, while Alyssa Laubach (130) finished in fourth.
Bethlehem Catholic finished 14th in the tournament and had one place winner in Remiah Rivera (106) taking home fourth place.
