LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Catching the sun

PRESS PHOTOS BY DONNA GEWERTZThe attendees of the Jan. 13 Northampton Area Public Library adult craft hour show their snowflake sun catchers, which will capture the sun’s light to project colors and patterns into their homes. Participants used coffee filters and liquid watercolor paints for their creations. The monthly craft series allows attendees to create in-person crafts or to receive materials to create crafts at home.
Monica Delong, of Walnutport, and Christine Owens, of Palmerton, begin the process of creating sun catchers by wetting coffee filters with water to allow them to lay flat and to receive liquid watercolor paints during Northampton Area Public Library’s snowflake sun catchers event, held Jan. 13 at the 1615 Laubach Ave. site.
Lynda Janis, of Northampton, shows her completed design.
Adult craft hour attendee Sharon Geosits, of Northampton, opted for deeper colors on her sun catcher by applying paints directly from the bottle.
Deb Breitfeller, of Danielsville, begins to apply liquid watercolor paint to her coffee filters, which will become her snowflake sun catcher. When hung at a window, the sun catcher will capture the light of the sun and project the pattern and color of the sun catcher similar to a stained-glass window.
Rochelle Duffy, of Northampton, displays the pattern she created using blue and green liquid watercolor paints on her coffee filters.
Owens’ suncatcher sports an intricate pattern created by using methodically applied “dots” of paint.
Library director Veronica Laroche provides instructions to crafters. Each person was provided with three coffee filters from which to design their craft. Attendees can register for the free monthly adult craft hour on the library’s website, northamptonapl.org.
Once decorating has been completed, the coffee filters are folded and scissors are used to cut patterns to resemble snowflakes, as demonstrated by Susan Bova, of Northampton.
Toni (left) and Chris Geonnotti, of East Allen Township, are focused on their crafting. Prewetting the coffee filters with water allows the paint to flow into random designs or provides for a more prescribed pattern.
