The Salisbury Township Recreation Advisory Committee held a meeting Jan. 20 to elect new officers and plan for a wide range of upcoming events.

Electing existing members to leadership positions on the committee was the first order of business. After nominations were made Mark Wilson and Pat Jacoby will continue to serve the recreation advisory committee as chair and vice chair and Kyle Moye will serve as secretary.

In their parks report, members noted the parks are mainly dormant during the cold days of winter except for the occasional hardy walkers on some of the trails especially at Lindberg Park.

The committee is working with the public works department to decide next steps concerning the large tree that was to take center stage at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Franko Park. In an unfortunate turn of events, the tree, decorated and ready to go, succumbed to the drought before the Dec. 6, 2024 festivities. The original tree must be removed before a new tree can be planted and the process of restringing the lights and planning for a new event can begin.

Looking ahead to summer, Recreation Director Genny Baillie noted applications are now being accepted for counselors for the summer playground program. You must be 16 years of age and able to provide your own transportation to apply. The program runs mid-June through late July, 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday evenings. Applications can be picked up at the municipal building.

The current frigid temperatures may make spring seem like a distant memory but the committee has solidified plans for this year’s township egg hunt which is slated for 10 a.m. April 5 at Franko Park. In case of inclement weather the egg hunt will be held 10 a.m. April 12.

Last summer’s AM Radio concert at Franko Park was so successful the committee has been exploring the possibility of booking another band to kick off the summer season. Further details will be provided once plans are finalized.

Mark your calendars for this year’s AM Radio concert which will return to Franko Park 1-4 p.m. Sept. 27. While taking a musical trip back to the songs of the 60s and 70s you can fill up on culinary delights supplied by Top of the Hill Grill.

Also in the planning stages is the township’s annual IronPigs game night and National Night Out in conjunction with the Salisbury Township Police Department.

The next meeting of the Recreation Advisory Committee will be held 7:30 p.m. March 17 in the municipal building, 2900 S. Pike Ave., Allentown.
