Trojan girls basketball beats ESS, Nazareth

The Parkland High School girls basketball team began the new calendar year on the right foot, winning its first two games, both in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and both on the road.

Last Friday night, the Trojans gave up a season-low in points and took down East Stroudsburg South 51-8 and followed that up about 16 hours later with a 37-32 victory over Nazareth.

In the win over the Cavaliers, the Parkland defense staked the Trojans to leads of 19-2 and 31-4 after the first and second quarters, respectively.

The Trojans had 11 players score in the win, led by eight points from Delaney Chilcote, who finished with a team-best two 3-pointers. Morgan Volpe tallied seven points. Isabella Hallal recorded six points and Carly Spang, Aneri McGalla and Sarah Car had five points each.

In the victory against the Blue Eagles, Parkland came from behind, trailing 10-8 after the first quarter. The Trojans tied the score at 16-16 at halftime and the teams remained deadlocked at 25-25 heading into the final quarter. Parkland outscored Nazareth 12-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Trojans connected on four 3-pointers, compared to the Blue Eagles hitting three. Chilcote finished with a team-high 14 points and made two 3-pointers. McGalla and Car both totaled eight points. Hallal contributed four points and Addison Fritzinger rounded out the scoring with three points.

The Trojans suffered their first league loss Tuesday against Emmaus 42-36. The Hornets are now the last team without a league loss while Parkland falls to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
