Tigers win showdown with NDGP

Northwestern Lehigh started the basketball season playing in a four-team tournament and had to face a strong Eastern Lebanon County team in the opener of that tournament. The Tigers fell 63-58 in that game and have not lost a game since, rattling off 12 straight wins to be one of just a few teams to have already locked up a spot in districts.

In Colonial League play, Northwestern is 9-0.

Over the past week, the Lady Tigers have sent a couple of messages to Colonial League teams.

With games against Notre Dame of Green Pond (9-3 overall, 8-1 Colonial) and Wilson (9-3, 7-3), Northwestern came out on the right side of the score in both games to keep its league record clean.

Senior Cara Thomas led the team with a combined 36 points in the two games with freshman teammate Natalie Conner scoring 25 points in the two games.

Against Notre Dame, Northwestern held an 11-8 advantage after the first quarter before going on a three-point shooting spree in the second to open up a 29-14 lead at halftime.

The Tigers hit six three-pointers in the game with four of them coming in the second quarter. Emma Freeman hit two from beyond the arc and Thomas and Conner nailed one each.

Conner hit her second three-pointer of the game in the third quarter to help push the lead. The Tigers hit 13 of 22 foul shots in the game with six of the misses coming in the first half. Hannah Gober finished the night 4-for-4 in foul shots with Conner hitting all three of her freebies, while Thomas went 6-for-9 in the game from the line.

The Lady Warriors were outplayed from the opening tip-off right up to the final buzzer as Northwestern started the game by outscoring Wilson 19-3 in the first quarter. Senior Brook Balliet played a starring role in the early onslaught as she hit on two early three-pointers and finished the first quarter with eight points and finished the game with 10 in the 65-35 win for Northwestern.

The Tigers are the only team in the Colonial League with a perfect record in league games and have wins against Notre Dame (8-1), Palmerton (8-2), Wilson (7-3), and Bangor (6-4). They face Pen Argyl (9-1) Thursday in another key matchup as teams start to fall into place for seeding in the Colonial League tournament.

Friday the Tigers are at Salisbury . After that they play three games in four days to start next week as they host Palisades before a trip to Jim Thorpe and another home game against Lehighton.
