Tiger grapplers head into final weeks of season
The Northwestern Lehigh wrestling team stayed unbeaten in Colonial League matches and went 3-2 in its second consecutive dual meet tournament in two weeks.
The Tigers (11-5 overall; 4-0 Colonial League) beat Palmerton 41-27 last Friday then competed in the Great Valley Duals at Great Valley High School Saturday.
In the tournament, Northwestern beat Episcopal Academy, Unionville and Lower Moreland, while suffering losses to Wallenpaupack and Haverford to finish fourth in the event.
The Tigers won eight matches, including five pins against Palmerton.
William Turner, Luke Fugazzotto, Jackson Bailey, Jackson Huber and Logan Uricchio beat their Blue Bomber opponents by fall. Chase Sukanick won his match by technical fall, while Weston Killar and Braydon Uricchio won bouts by decision.
Northwestern started Saturday’s tournament with a 54-24 win over Episcopal Academy, winning nine bouts with six pins.
Killar, Noah Griffith, Koehler, Vinnie Fugazzotto, Luke Fugazzotto and Huber won matches by fall against Episcopal.
The Tigers took down Unionville 47-30 with seven pins in the contest.
Logan Uricchio, Braydon Uricchio, Sukanick, Turner, Koehler, Vinnie Fugazzotto and Luke Fugazzotto all won matches by fall. Killar earned a win by technical fall.
In a 40-31 loss to Wallenpaupack, Sukanick, Luke Fugazzotto and Logan Uricchio pinned their Buckhorn opponents. Koehler and Killar won matches by technical fall and Braydon Uricchio won by decision.
The Tigers rolled to a 59-5 win over Lower Moreland to get to the third-place match.
Killar, Sukanick, Koehler, Vinnie Fugazzotto and Luke Fugazzotto pinned their Lower Moreland opponents in the match that saw the Tigers pick up four wins by forfeit. Braydon Uricchio won by technical fall in the match.
The Tigers settled for fourth place after a 36-34 loss to Haverford in the third-place match.
Killar, Koehler, Vinnie Fugazzotto and Luke Fugazzotto all picked up pins in the loss, while Sukanick earned a win by major decision.
Faith Christian Academy won the tournament with a 66-3 victory of Wallenpaupack in the championship match.
Northwestern entered this week with two matches left on the Colonial League dual meet schedule, Wednesday against Saucon Valley and next Thursday, Jan. 23, against Catasauqua. The team will also compete in Sunday’s league championships at Catasauqua.
Heading into the match against Saucon Valley, which took place after Press deadline, the Tigers were in fourth place in the District 11 Class 2A rankings and securely in position to qualify for the district team tournament Feb. 1. The top eight teams make the tournament, which will be held at Freedom High School.
