Parkland secures D-11 playoff spot

The Parkland High School girls basketball team had a busy week last week, competing in three games, two in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and one nonconference game.

The Trojans began the week with a 39-33 defeat at Easton last Tuesday, Jan. 14, but responded two nights later with a 56-51 overtime home victory over Dieruff on senior night. The week ended with a 46-33 loss in nonconference action at Cumberland Valley on Saturday afternoon.

It was a low-scoring first quarter in the game with the Red Rovers as the two teams combined for just seven points, Easton scoring five of the seven. They took control of the game in the second quarter, however, outscoring the Trojans 16-8 to take a 21-10 lead at halftime.

Parkland pulled to within single digits in the third quarter, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Aneri McGalla finished with a team-high 13 points. Isabella Hallal tallied eight points and both Delaney Chilcote and Sarah Car had six points to round out the scoring.

In the win against the Huskies, the Trojans completed a huge comeback in the fourth quarter to force overtime after trailing 43-32 after the third quarter. Parkland outscored Dieruff 9-4 in overtime to complete the comeback victory.

McGalla recorded a game-high 20 points. Chilcote totaled 14 points. Car contributed nine and Hallal added seven points.

In the game with Cumberland Valley, the Trojans were neck-and-neck with them for most of the game, as the teams were tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter and it was 20-14 at halftime in favor of CV, which also led 29-25 after three. The game was decided in a fourth quarter in which Cumberland Valley outscored Parkland 17-8 to win it.

Hallal led the way with 10 points. Addison Fritzinger finished with seven points, McGalla had six and Chilcote added five points.

Parkland, which is now 11-6 overall and 9-2 in the conference, clinched a District 11 playoff berth with last week’s wins. The Trojans are in fifth place in the district rankings and are one of seven teams that have qualified in Class 6A heading into this week.

In conference action, Parkland trails Emmaus (11-0) by one game in the Lehigh Division and is in position to be the third or fourth seed for the league tournament in a few weeks.

Parkland has two conference games this week. The Trojans hosted Allen this past Tuesday and travel to take on Whitehall on Friday night.
