NWL cruises to win over Lehighton

After a busy stretch of games, the Northwestern Lehigh girls basketball team has had a little time to relax recently.

The Tigers have not played since last Thursday when they downed Lehighton in a Colonial League matchup. They have just four games left on the regular season schedule before and have clinched their spot in both the Colonial League and District 11 playoffs.

Against Lehighton (6-8 Colonial, 7-10 overall), Northwestern cruised to a 66-36 win over the Indians. Natalie Conner continued her high-scoring freshman season with a 27-point night to lead all scorers. Helping to boost her point total were four three-pointers in the game. Cara Thomas scored 18 in the win.

The Northwestern defense also played well to help keep Lehighton in check.

Northwestern (14-0, 17-1) led by just four at the end of the first quarter and stretched their lead to nine points at halftime. The Tigers ran away with the game by scoring 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters while holding Lehighton to just 11 second half points.

In the Colonial League standings, Northwestern has wrapped up a playoff spot and are coming close to clinching the West Division and the Tigers currently hold the top seed for the postseason tournament. Notre Dame of Green Pond (12-1, 13-3) is currently 1 ½ games behind Northwestern for the top spot and Palmerton (12-2, 15-3) stands two games behind the Tigers.

Northwestern travels to Palmerton for the final game of the regular season on Jan. 31.

In the District 11 4A standings, Northwestern sits atop the standings and has clinched a postseason spot. Palmerton is second in the district power rankings, making that final game of the season a little more interesting.

Northwestern has a pair of road games over the next week as they play at Northern Lehigh and then at Moravian Academy for a game on Monday. After that, they play their final home game against Jim Thorpe on the 29th and then travel to Palmerton for the season finale.
