Mosel wins twice in meet against Mounties
The Emmaus boys swim team returned to the dual meet portion of its schedule last week and picked up wins over East Penn Conference foe Stroudsburg and Wilson West Lawn, one of the top teams in District 3.
Against Stroudsburg, the Hornets beat the Mountaineers by a score of 69-25 as sophomore Carson Mosel stole the show with a pair of first place finishes as he took the 200-yard freestyle when he posted a time of 1:55.10 to finish just under .03 ahead of his competition from Stroudsburg.
He then took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a season best time of 1:01.71, just .93 ahead of teammate Brady Hazlett.
Reid Lovett swam the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.49 to take the victory there and Joe Lyons turned in a time of 1:01.19 in the 100-yard backstroke to put him 4.91 seconds ahead of teammate Evan LaRussa, who grabbed second.
Sophomore Carter Smith turned in a personal best time of 1:09.78 in the 100-yard breaststroke to win the event by 8.93 seconds over his nearest competitor from Stroudsburg.
The Hornets also swam against Easton recently and senior Griffin Messenlehner and junior Roman Herman were the only two Emmaus swimmers to pick up wins in both meets.
Messenlehner won the 50-yard freestyle against Stroudsburg and the 100-yard backstroke against Wilson. Against Stroudsburg, Messenlehner was battling teammate Brady King, who finished just 1.42 seconds behind Messenlehner’s pace.
Herman turned in a season best time of 5:05.28 in the 500-yard freestyle against Stroudsburg ahead of teammate Graham Lovett, who finished in 5:14.07 in the event.
In the 100-yard freestyle against Wilson, Herman edged the Bulldogs Ezekiel Eberly by just .31 seconds.
Emmaus won all three relay events against the Mountaineers. The 200-yard medley relay team of Julian Vlaeminck, Will Reichart, Nethaniel Peters and Brennan Smith won the event by just .79 seconds.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Messenlehner, Brady King, Aaron Kenny and Brennan Smith teamed up for the win and the 400-yard freestyle team easily won the event, finishing with a time of 3:21.82 to finish over 20 seconds ahead of Stroudsburg’s top team. Herman, Reid Lovett, Messenlehner, and Vlaeminck were on that team.
In addition to the wins by Messenlehner and Herman against Wilson, Brady King turned in a pair of victories in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle where he swam a personal best time of 4:40.77 and finished ahead of teammate Reid Lovett, who finished in a time of 4:52.77.
Vlaeminck took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle event, besting Eberly by .27 seconds with a top time of 22.21.
The 200 medley and freestyle relay teams took second place finishes against Wilson while the 400-yard freestyle team took the top spot with a time of 3:14.22, a full 11 seconds ahead of Wilson’s top team. Herman, Reid Lovett, Brady King and Messenlehner comprised the 400 relay team for Emmaus.
There was no diving against Stroudsburg, but Emmaus’ Doug Cornish won the diving competition against Wilson with a score of 251.9.
Emmaus downed the Bulldogs 107-78. The Hornets host Liberty this week and then travel to Bethlehem to face Freedom next week.
