Hornet ice hockey team beats Spartans

The Emmaus High School ice hockey team is gearing up for the final quarter of its 2024-25 regular season in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League.

The Green Hornets are one of six teams competing in the league and they have played seven of their 10 games so far. The other five teams include Parkland, Southern Lehigh, Northampton, Nazareth and the Saints (Bethlehem Catholic, Central Catholic and Notre Dame Green Pond co-op team).

Emmaus is 1-6 overall and is tied with Parkland in last place. The Hornets’ victory came against Southern Lehigh on Nov. 25, winning 6-3. Before that, Emmaus dropped its season opener 4-2 to Parkland and then fell 2-1 to Northampton.

In the win over Southern Lehigh, the Hornets found the back of the net in each quarter and led 4-1 after the second period to give themselves some breathing room in the third period.

Greyson Schmidt got the scoring going for Emmaus with a first-period goal off assists by Connor Treaster and Krasley Karson. Back-to-back goals in the second period came from Noah Holschwander and Luke Patterson with Aidan Nichols assisting on Holschwander’s, as the Hornets went on top 3-0.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard just 0:20 after Patterson’s goal, but Emmaus closed out the quarter with more momentum as Karson recorded a goal. The Hornets then took a four-goal lead as Bloom Aiden scored a goal 3:51 into the third period.

The Spartans tacked on two straight goals in a span of just 0:06, but Schmidt got the last laugh as he tallied his second of the game to complete the scoring in the game.

Even though Emmaus doubled up the Spartans in goals, Southern Lehigh outshot the Green Hornets 38-29 overall. Josh Pierce finished with 35 saves on the night in goal for Emmaus and a .921 save percentage.

Emmaus then dropped back-to-back games to Nazareth, the rematch with Southern Lehigh and then one to the Kids.

Emmaus has a rematch with Parkland on Monday, Jan. 27. The two teams opened the season against each other back on Oct. 28, with the Trojans walking off the ice as 4-2 victors. The Hornets then have two games in February to finish out the regular season, both against the Saints.
