The Salisbury girls basketball team had a bit of a break in the schedule and returned for its first game of 2025 last Friday when it went up against Southern Lehigh. The Lady Spartans came out on top as they pulled away in the second half for a 47-25 win.
Early on, Southern Lehigh (2-8 overall, 2-6 Colonial) took a lead in the game before Salisbury found its offensive stride with Sophia Gunning hitting a pair of second quarter three-pointers that tied the game at 16-16 at halftime.
The Spartans used the midgame break to make a few changes and regroup, as they were able to shut down Gunning’s outside shot and make the Falcons work for every point they could get. In the end, Southern Lehigh was too tough for the Falcons (2-8, 1-5) and picked up the win in the Colonial League matchup.
One constant for Salisbury this season has been Kendra Morgan, who scored 17 points in the game. The only other Salisbury player to score in the second half was Isabella Gonzalez.
Falcon players got to the free-throw line just seven times in the game and were unable to convert a free throw. Southern Lehigh went just 3-for-9 from the foul line and were led in scoring by Eliana Marques, who sank four three-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Spartans pulled away.
Monday night’s game against Catasauqua was postponed by bad weather and will be played at Salisbury on Jan. 27. The Falcons play at Saucon Valley Thursday before hosting Northwestern Lehigh Friday night. Next week opens with a game Monday night at Palmerton.
