EHS girls clinch D-11 playoff spot
The Emmaus High School girls basketball team has won every game since an early-season loss to Hazleton on Dec. 6. The Green Hornets won three games three last week to stretch their winning streak to 10 games while clinching a District 11 playoff berth in the process.
Last Tuesday night, Jan. 7, the Hornets took down rival and defending EPC champion Parkland 42-36. They had their first home game since before Christmas and got the better of Pocono Mountain East 62-17 last Friday night and followed that up the next day with a 58-21 nonconference victory at Blue Mountain.
Against the Trojans, Emmaus trailed after every quarter, but used the final frame to make a comeback and outscored Parkland 16-9 to complete the rally. The Hornets were behind 8-6 after the first quarter, 21-18 at halftime and 27-26 after three.
Gabby DeVita finished with a team-best 11 points. Cassie Doemling and Olive Whitney both recorded nine points with the latter draining three 3-pointers. Sylvia Sokolofski added five points.
In the win over the Cardinals, Emmaus took control from the start of the game, outscoring them 17-3 in the opening quarter and never letting the foot off the gas pedal.
DeVita netted more points than the entire PME team with 19, including three 3-pointers. Whitney tallied 10 points. Both Sokolofski and Kaitlyn Grochowski contributed five points.
Just like in the game the night before, the Hornets took command early, outscoring the Eagles 24-9 in the first half to secure the victory. DeVita one-upped herself from the night before and finished with a game-high 20 points. Sierra Stevens recorded 13 points and tied a team-high with three 3-pointers. Whitney added nine points on three 3’s.
Emmaus heads into this week at 13-1 overall and 9-0 in East Penn Conference play. The Hornets hold a two-game lead over Easton in the District 11 Class 6A rankings and are one game ahead of both Parkland and Liberty in the EPC standings with eight games left in the regular season.
