EHS boys basketball beats BC, falls to Zephs

The Emmaus High School boys basketball team competed in two games in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play last week. The Hornets won one and lost one as they continue to find their identity this season.

Emmaus recorded its second win in a row and third victory by double figures on the season as it beat Bethlehem Catholic 61-46 at home last Tuesday, Jan. 14, and then fell at Whitehall 57-55 on Friday night.

The win over the Golden Hawks was decided in the third quarter as Emmaus came out of halftime in a tie game and outscored Becahi 26-10 to take full control and leave with a victory. The two teams were tied 10-10 after the first quarter and then 21-21 at halftime before that third quarter spurt put the Hornets ahead 47-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Owen Hafner and Jack Csensits combined for 40 points as Hafner finished with a game-high 22 points and Csensits recorded 18 with two 3-pointers. Chase Whitesell tallied 12 points and Matt Rooney contributed three points. Lucas Stephan, Michael Rooney and Matt Deschenes all had two points.

Emmaus was downed by a buzzer-beating layup by the Zephyrs when the score was tied at 55-55 late in the game. The Hornets led 16-15 after the first quarter and were ahead 30-26 at halftime, but Whitehall rallied in the second half, outscoring Emmaus 31-25.

Csensits, Whitesell and Hafner each scored 12 points and Michael Rooney added nine points.

Emmaus, which is now 4-12 overall and 4-7 in the conference, has a busy week with three games, two of them in-conference and another out of conference. The Hornets were at Central Catholic Tuesday and host Southern Lehigh on Thursday night, followed by a game at home against Allen on Friday.
