Divers lead the way at BU New Year’s Challenge

The Parkland swimming and diving teams competed in New Year’s Challenge at Bucknell University last weekend.

The Parkland girls team took fifth place at the meet, which was won by Wilson West Lawn. In the boys meet, the Trojans finished sixth overall as North Allegheny earned the meet’s boys team title.

Parkland’s divers had a stellar day at the meet as Johanna Cook (357.65) and Sam Schultz (357.45) took first and second place, respectively.

Trojan freshman Sydney LaBaugh won a pair of events at the invitational. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.61, a second faster than Emma Dougherty (52.77) of Wilson in second place. She also took first place in backstroke with at time of 56.97.

Parkland’s girls medley relay team started the meet with a second-place finish with the foursome of Baylee Kish, Kelsey McPeek, Milla Hahn and LaBaugh.

McPeek swam to a pair of third-place finishes at Bucknell in the individual medley and breaststroke. Milla Hahn finished third in the butterfly event.

In boys events, Parkland was led by Bradley Kunz, who took second place in diving. Parkland’s top individual finishes in the boys meet included Pedro Terran’s fifth-place finish in 200 freestyle and Gabe Krizel’s fifth place in 100 backstroke.

The Parkland boys team’s top swimming finish at the meet came in the opening event when the medley relay team of Krizel, Ethan Coleman, Thomas Price and Doug Bell finished fourth.

The Trojans beat Southern Lehigh in a dual meet on Dec. 27.

In the girls meet, Parkland won 130-53 as six different Trojans won individual events against the Spartans.

Parkland’s boys team beat Southern Lehigh 140-43 as Dominic Faenza won two events and the Trojans took seven of the nine individual events and took the top two places in all three relays.
