Ramos wins Colonial title

Jacob Ramos cherished the moment.

The Catasauqua senior heavyweight recently won his weight class at the Colonial League championships. And Ramos did it in grand style.

He decisioned Saucon Valley’s Ezekiel Deily, 11-4, before he recorded falls over Northwestern ‘s Jackson Huber, Salisbury’s Sam Krauss, and Jim Thorpe’s Blake Carroll in his own high school gym. With the championship, Ramos raised his record to 13-7 overall with seven falls.

Overall, Catty’s Jonathan Cordon-Pinto and Braden Bartholomew both lost in the “blood round,” a match away from placing top-four. The team finished 12th overall in the tournament.

Ramos, who began wrestling last season, has appreciated every moment along the way. It was special to achieve the mark in front of his home fans.

“It felt great winning something like that while having some of your community there supporting you,” beamed Ramos. “That feeling is amazing.”

Head coach Jonathan Reed relished Ramos’ performance.

“Overall the kids did as expected, but the tournament belonged to Jacob Ramos,” boasted Reed. “On his run to the championship, Jacob defeated two wrestlers who have had his number in the past. First, he completely controlled his opponent from Saucon Valley who he was pinned by in our first match of the year. Next, he had another kid who beat him two or three times last season from Salisbury. Jacob ended up pinning that opponent, which put him into the finals against a kid from Jim Thorpe.

“He beat that kid in overtime at this year’s Christmas tournament in overtime, so we knew he had a good chance at winning but knew it was going to be a battle. After a close two periods of wrestling, Jacob took control of the third period resulting in a pin with about 10 seconds left in the match.

“He wrestled an amazing tournament and gives him tons of confidence moving onto the rest of the season. He now knows he can compete and beat any heavyweight in the area!”

Reed also has been impressed with Ramos’s development.

“In only his second year competing, Jacob is progressing tremendously and gaining more and more confidence with every win,” gushed Reed. “To win a Colonial League Championship in only his second year goes to show anything is possible with grit, determination, and hard work.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him with everything he has overcome through the years. To win that championship is something he will never forget and it couldn’t have happened to a better kid.”

Ramos, who was 11-17 last season, believes he had turned the corner.

“I feel like I am wrestling better now than I did at the beginning of the year,” stressed Ramos. “I have improved a lot, and I have been taking it day-by-day.

“I have gained more confidence from last year, and I am more comfortable with doing everything now. I feel ten times better.”
