LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls are having up and down season

For the Catasauqua girls’ wrestling team, it is a process.

The Lady Rough Riders have had their share of peaks and valleys this season in their inaugural season. But they have managed to maintain a positive outlook, as they continue to develop throughout the season.

Head coach Mike Rusnock has been happy with the early returns this season. They recently picked up their first win against Palmerton in an impressive 42-15 victory.

“We lost two matches Palisades and Lehighton, which are two very good, established teams,” said Rusnock, “We thought we would get into the win column soon, and we put together a nice win against Palmerton.”

In the Palmerton victory, sophomores Arianna Stallworth and Esmeralda Serrano recorded falls, and the Roughies received five forfeits.

Stallworth (118, 124) has a 3-4 record and Serrano (170) has a 7-3 mark.

Junior Jaylynn Bonilla (170) has a 7-4 record with five falls, freshman Haley Cedeno (118) has a 5-5 mark, and Junior Madison Monberger (124, 130) has a 5-6 record.

The Roughies placed second in the Blue Raider Tournament in Tamaqua. Arianna Stallworth was second at 124, junior Dakota Velas was third at 136, junior Jaiden Bailey was fourth at 124, and junior Emily DeLong was sixth at 136.

In the Palmerton Bomber Braw JV tournament, the Roughies finished fifth as a team.

Senior Alicia Avila (148) and freshman Ashlie Giron (135) both finished as a runner-up in their perspective weights. Serrano, Monberger and Arianna Stallworth each finished third and DeLong was fourth.

However, the Roughies also have been hit with their share of injuries.

Junior Janetliz Burgos (106) has been in the room for the past three weeks, and she should be returning to the lineup soon, and fellow junior Amani Dougherty-Phillips (124) injured collar ligaments and also is expected back shortly.

Freshman Madison Beirle (190) broke her collar bone, and she is lost for the season.

“Janetliz and Amani are both anxious to get better and hungry for improvement,” said Rusnock. “Both of them have great potential.

“Madison has been attending practices to see what she can learn.”

The Roughies will be idle until the District 11 meet Feb. 16, but Rusnock is confident they will continue to progress.

“The girls are improving,” he stressed. “They know wrestling moves and now we are looking to fine tune their skills. They have to learn to wrestle, put moves together, and look for second moves if first one is not there.”
