LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Boys keep up winning ways

These days, the Whitehall boys’ basketball team is letting the good times roll.

Heading into this week, the team just had a recent eight-game winning streak snapped but sit at 14-3, second in the district behind Liberty, which is also 14-3.

Yet, Whitehall hasn’t let many things stand in their way.

They easily handled the visiting Blue Eagles last Monday night by a 64-38 final score, having a 46-20 lead at halftime. They also had wins over Northampton and Emmaus last week. Heading into this week, they have games with Dieruff and Parkland.

A.J. Hines, who had been the Zephyrs’ leading scorer throughout the season, paced Whitehall with 17 points, and Dominic Gonzalez added 11. Seth Hoderewski had nine points, and Talon and Tanner Dogmanits chipped in with nine and eight points respectively in the game against Nazareth.

Head coach Jeff Jones was impressed by his team’s fast start that helped raise their record to 14-3 overall. The Zephyrs also clinched a district berth recently.

“We had a great start scoring 23 points each in the first and second quarters,” beamed Jones about the Nazareth game. “It was a season-high 46 points at the half that was fueled by good defense, a really good fast break, and sharing of the ball.

“I’d guess that is was as good of a half as we’ve had this year. The second half we got up by 30, which put the mercy rule into effect. We had another good night of balanced scoring.”

Jones noted that Hines is closing in on 1,000 points for his career, and the team wants to collect as many wins down the stretch.

“The main focus now is to win as many games as possible for a high seed in both the EPC (East Penn Conference) and district tournaments,” noted Jones. “The team continues to get great contributions from the starters and significant minutes off the bench from Cole Richards and Dom Gonzalez.

“We’re getting balanced scoring and playing good defense in our matchup zone. That’s been our key to success so far.”
