Grohotolsky named to fill empty council seat

At its Jan. 14 meeting, Coplay Borough Council named Timothy Grohotolsky to fill a seat left vacant by the death of Councilman Charles Sodl.

Grohotolsky will serve a one-year term, ending in 2025.

At the Jan. 7 workshop meeting, council members heard statements from Grohotolsky and Christopher Parker, both of whom sought the vacant seat.

Grohotolsky was named by a 4-1 vote, so Parker’s nomination was not made.

Borough council also voted to use Northampton Regional Emergency Medical Services for ambulance services and to approve a $2,000 donation to the EMS unit.

A member of NREMS addressed council members about its services, which include ambulatory care to residents if insurance doesn’t cover the cost.

The switch from Cetronia Ambulance Corps was made, per council, due to response time and emergency personnel availability. Cetronia will be the second call.

Lehigh County Executive Phillips Armstrong attended the meeting to talk about the state’s requirement that all municipalities become a part of a joint radio communication effort among fire, police and other emergency personnel. The county is planning to purchase the radios, which cost $7,000 each, and offer a repayment plan to the municipalities, Armstrong said.

The state requirement for joint communication must be in place by the end of this year.

In other business, council approved the hiring of Brandon Morris as a full-time employee of the public works department. He had been employed part time.

Council approved the purchase of a street sweeper, which has a cost of $297,000. It will be fully paid with a Local Share Account grant.

Tow operators approved to serve the borough for 2025 include Atlas Towing, Hesch Service Station, Force One Towing and Recovery and Ironton Auto Body.

Council also approved the reappointment of Karen Stoisits to the Coplay Public Library Board for a three-year term, ending in 2027.

Council will meet for a workshop Feb. 4 and a regular meeting Feb. 11. Both will be held 7 p.m. at borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St.
