Girls basketball team on win streak
The Northampton girls basketball heads into the Christmas break on a two game winning streak to bring their record for the season to 4-4. On Thursday they notched their best win of the season by taking down previously 5-2 Stroudsburg on Bob Nemeth Court by a score of 49-36.
There were three scoring runs that keyed the K-Kids’ win. First, with point guard and leading scorer Anne Beenders on the bench with three fouls late in the second quarter, Northampton closed the first half on 6-0 run over the final two minutes. That erased a 20-18 Mounties lead and sent the Kids to the locker room up 24-20.
Stroudsburg scored the first 5 points of the second half to take what would be their last lead of the game, 25-24. From there, Northampton scored 13 straight points that led to their leading 39-30 at the end of the third quarter.
The final run was the closing stretch of the game. Stroudsburg had closed to 41-36, but the K-Kids outscored the Mounties 8-0 over the last 5 minutes of the game to seal the victory.
“When we make some shots, we’re pretty good. When we beat Bangor, they played tough defense, but we made shots. Like tonight, we had balanced scoring. We just have to stop turning the ball over so much (16 turnovers). Against Dieruff and Parkland, we scored in the 20s,” summarized head coach Jeff Jacksits after the game.
Beenders scored 14 points, pulled down 6 rebounds, and snared 4 steals. Fellow captain Jenna Raysley also had 14 points and snatched 7 boards. Ro Echevarria notched a dozen points and 8 rebounds. Isabella Pecuch had 9 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals.
This week the team is playing in the Coordinated Health Christmas Tournament at Pocono Mountain West on Friday and Saturday. They take on the host school in round one and face a likely matchup with Nazareth in the championship game.
