NAACP MLK PROGRAM: The NAACP Bethlehem presents “The Battle Is Not Ours, It’s the Lord’s” on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20, beginning at noon at the St. John AME Zion Church, 718 Pawnee St., Bethlehem. Speaker for the event is Shanise N. Palmer, pastor of preaching at Union Baptist Church in Allentown.
NMIH SPEAKER: Australian photojournalist Dane Rhys shares his experiences photographing workers at the last anthracite mine in Western Europe Jan. 26 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the National Museum of Industrial History. Rhys will present images of the miners at the Aberpergwm Anthracite Mine in South Wales, discuss the challenges of shooting medium format color film in lowlight underground conditions, and explore the historical significance of the mine and town. He will also share a current mine map and samples of the various anthracite products produced.
Rhys, originally from Australia and now based in the United States, is a freelance photojournalist. After leaving a career in the gold mining industry, he began documenting industrial workers and their communities, focusing on deindustrialization and the changing energy sector.

SCHOOL AUDITIONS: The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts will be holding auditions for the 2025-26 school year on Jan. 31, Feb. 14 and Feb. 15. Auditions are by appointment only and can be scheduled by going to the admissions page on the school website, CharterArts.org. Any student entering ninth, 10th, 11th or 12th grade who resides in Pennsylvania is eligible to audition.
WRITERS’ GROUP: Registration is now open for the 2025 Write Stuff Writers’ Conference, presented by the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group March 13-15, at Homewood Suites by Hilton, 3350 Center Parkway, Center Valley. Tiffany Yates Martin is the keynote speaker and main presenter.
Yates Martin has spent nearly 30 years as an editor working in the publishing industry with major publishers and The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal-bestselling and award-winning authors, as well as indie and newer authors.
