Hawks top NDGP
Bethlehem Catholic doesn’t get many tough dual meets over the course of the regular season, but the Hawks got a postseason preview over the weekend with a showdown against Notre Dame Green Pond.
Bethlehem Catholic (5-0) came away with their fourth straight win over the Crusaders, taking home a 34-24 victory against the crosstown school that will move up to 3A for the first time in districts next month.
“I think the biggest aspect and the biggest takeaway are that we won and still didn’t have all of our kids perform at their best,” said Becahi head coach Mike Cole. “While I think it was a good performance, it wasn’t our best. I see us on a road to getting better as the season moves along. This is a good sign to me and I think we are right where we want to be at this point in the season.”
Becahi won three of the first five bouts of the match and led 14-12 heading into Mason Thomas’ bout with Jared Gonzalez at 145. Thomas registered an 11-3 major decision to springboard the Hawks to four straight wins in the bout to take command with a 31-12 advantage heading into the final three bouts. The Crusaders picked up falls at 189 and 215 to close the gap until Connor Gillahan finished the night strong with a 6-4 decision over Noah Knorp.
After falling short with a second-place finish at their own Tony Iasiello Tournament over the holidays, coming back with a convincing win against one of the state’s best teams was a step in the right direction for Cole and his team.
“The loss in our own tournament was disappointing, but it’s a learning experience that we need to grow from,” he said. “Some of our guys were banged up, and we had to prioritize long-term goals by resting key wrestlers, which affected our lineup. However, as a team, we underestimated the competition and didn’t push ourselves to our full potential in certain matches.
“With the latter part of the season ahead, it’s time to regroup, stay focused, and use this experience to prepare for March when it truly counts.”
The Hawks have their last true test of the regular season this week when they travel to Easton Wednesday night to take on the 2-1 Rovers.
Freedom and Liberty haven’t had a dual meet since before Christmas, but both hit the road this weekend to the Virginia Duals.
Liberty (3-0) does get some warmup action with a dual meet at Pocono Mountain East on Wednesday.
