At The Movies: Slow as movies in January

January is often a quiet month for theatrical movie releases.
Movie studio executives realize many movie-goers are catching up with seeing the plethora of movies released before year’s end, including Oscar nominations contenders.
Here are some previews.
Unreel, Jan. 10:
“Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” MPAA rated R: The Panther mafia is planning its biggest diamond heist yet. Christian Gudegast (director: “Den Of Thieves,” 2018) directs Gerard Butler (returning as Big Nick), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (returning as Donnie), Salvatore Esposito and Evin Ahmad in the Crime Thriller Action Drama.
“The Last Showgirl,” MPAA rated R: Las Vegas showgirl has her show canceled. Now what? Possible Oscar nomination for Pamela Anderson (Yes, that Pamela Anderson, of TV’s “Baywatch,” 1992-1997). Gia Coppola (director: “Palo Alto,” 2013; “Mainstream,” 2020; granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola), directs. The screenplay is by Kate Gersten (screenwriter: TV’s “Mozart in the Jungle,” 2024-2016; TV’s “The Good Place,” 2017-2019). Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd also star in the Drama.
“Diane Warren: Relentless,” No MPAA Rating: A documentary film directed by Bess Kargman (director: “First Position,” 2011, about the Youth America Grand Prix ballet contest; TV’s “Defying Gravity: The Untold Story of Women’s Gymnastics,” 2020) about the 15-time Grammy Award nominee Warren (songwriter: “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Un-Break My Heart,” “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing”). Interviews include Cher, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Gloria Estefan, Kesha, LeAnn Rimes and Quincy Jones.

Theatrical Movie Domestic 2024 Box Office: According to Comscore, as reported by the entertainment trade publication Variety, theatrical motion picture domestic box office for 2024 was $8.7 billion, down 3.3 percent from $9.04 billion in 2023 and down 23.5 percent from $11.3 billion in 2019, regarded as the last pre-Covid year.
Admissions for 2024 were put at 800 million, down from pre-Covid admissions of 1.3 billion.
The No. 1 movie at the box office for 2024 was Disney’s “Inside Out 2,” grossing $652 million domestically and $1.69 billion worldwide.
Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” was the No. 2 movie with $1.33 billion worldwide.
“Despicable Me 4” was the No. 3 movie, as of the publication date for this article, with $969 million worldwide.
“Moana 2,” the No. 4 movie with $900 million, still in theatrical release, may move up to No. 3.
Disney was No. 1 in market share for 2024 with $2.2 billion domestically and $5.46 billion worldwide, the first studio to surpass $5 billion since 2019.
Universal was No. 2 in market share for 2024 with $1.89 billion domestically and $3.75 billion worldwide, paced by the hits “Despicable Me 4,” “Wicked,” “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Twisters.”
Warner Bros. was No. 3 with $1.16 billion domestically, with the hits “Dune: Part 2” and “Godzilla x Kong.”
Nine of the Top 10 movies in 2024 were sequels, with the exception of “Wicked,” adapted from the hit Broadway musical.
Sony was No. 4 with $1 billion domestically and $2.4 billion worldwide with the hits “Venom 3,” “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “It Ends With Us.”
Paramount was No. 5 with $879.5 million domestically with the hits “Gladiator 2” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
Theatrical Movie Domestic Weekend Box Office, Jan. 3-5: “Mufasa: The Lion King” moved up one place to No. 1 after two weeks at No. 2 with $23.8 million in 3,925 theaters, $168 6 million, three weeks, dethroning “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” from No. 1 two weeks in a row, $21.2 million in 3,746 theaters, $187.5 million, three weeks.
3. “Nosferatu” stayed in place, $13.2 million in 3,132 theaters, $69.4 million, two weeks. 4. “Moana 2” moved up one place, $12.3 million in 3,345 theaters, $425.1 million, six weeks. 5. “Wicked” dropped one place, $10.2 million in 3,287 theaters, $450.7 million, seven weeks. 6. “A Complete Unknown” stayed in place, $8 million in 2,835 theaters; $41.6 million, two weeks. 7. “Babygirl” stayed in place, $4.4 million in 2,164 theaters, $16.1 million, three weeks. 8. “Gladiator II” stayed in place, $2.6 million in 1,748 theaters, $168.8 million, seven weeks. 9. “Homestead” stayed in place, $2.1 million in 1,700 theaters, $17.4 million, three weeks. 10. “The Fire Inside” stayed in place, $1.2 million in 2,032 theaters, $7.1 million, two weeks.

Theatrical Movie Domestic Weekend Box Office, Dec. 27-29: “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” stayed at No. 1 two weeks in a row, $37 million in 3,769 theaters, $136.5 million, two weeks.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” stayed at No.2 with $36.8 million in 4,100 theaters, $113.1 million, two weeks.
3. “Nosferatu,” director Robert Eggers’ take on the vampire tale starring Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult, $21.6 million in 2,992 theaters, weekend; $40.8 million since Dec. 25 opening. 4. “Wicked” dropped one place, $19.7 million in 3,177 theaters, $424.5 million, six weeks. 5. “Moana 2” dropped one place, $18.9 million in 3,405 theaters, $395.3 million, five weeks. 6. “A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton and Elle Fanning, $11.6 million in 2,835 theaters; $23.2 million since Dec. 25 opening. 7. “Babygirl,” starring Nicole Kidman, $4.4 million in 2,115 theaters, $7.3 million since Dec. 25 opening. 8. “Gladiator II” dropped two places, $4 million in 1,865 theaters, $163 million, six weeks. 9. “Homestead” dropped four places, $3 million in 1,769 theaters, $12.7 million, two weeks. 10. “The Fire Inside,” a docudrama about female boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, $1.9 million in 2,006 theaters, $4.2 million since Dec. 25 opening.
