WSVFC firefighters take Santa into neighborhoods
As they do every year shortly before Christmas, Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company firefighters took Santa Claus on a tour of the neighborhoods in the fire company’s fire district Dec. 21.
Unlike previous years, the 1965 American LaFrance antique fire engine that for years has carried Santa on his run, was in the shop for repairs.
So, Assistant Chief William Sames, who plans the annual Santa run, had to make other plans. With a little help from friends, Sames fashioned a Santa’s-sleigh-like conveyance on a flat bed trailer to be pulled behind the fire company’s utility truck. Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Grinch braved the cold in the sleigh for several hours during the run, with a stop at the chief’s house for hot chocolate in midafternoon.
The Santa run entourage of engines set out this year about 10 a.m. from the fire company’s newly-rebuilt Swain Station at 950. S. Ott St.
Cold, snowy weather kept many youngsters waving from porches and living room windows instead of lining the streets. Some of those who braved the cold and waited to see Santa close-up were rewarded with candy canes and an opportunity for moms and dads to take photos.
Fire sirens alerted fans Santa was in the neighborhood and Facebook alerts showed Santa’s progress.
“We look forward to the neighborhood Santa runs each year as much as our township youngsters do,” Fire Chief Joshua Wells said.
