The Pa. State Police Troop M, Fogelsville Crime Unit, is investigating an incident that occurred Dec. 16, 2024, on Route 22 West, Mile Marker 316.7, South Whitehall Township.

According to police, at approximately 11:30 a.m. that day, Troopers were advised of a suicidal man who was traveling into Pennsylvania from New Jersey.

Troopers saw the man driving a BMW X-5 westbound on Route 22 and attempted to stop the vehicle, but he fled from Troopers.

Troopers pursued the BMW onto local roads and back onto Route 22, where the fleeing vehicle crashed, and caught fire.

Police say the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was immediately treated at the scene by Troopers for self-inflicted injuries to his body.

The man was transported from the scene to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for his injuries.

All traffic on Route 22 West was detoured onto the Route 309 exit.

Traffic on Route 22 East remained open.

Bethlehem and Fogelsville Patrol Units, Cetronia and Greenwalds fire departments and Universal Medical Response assisted at the scene.
