Curtain Rises: Sing for America debuting “Pinocchio: A Musical”

Sing For America, the theater group started by five singing siblings from Forks Township, Northampton County, will present the Lehigh Valley premiere of “Pinocchio: A Musical,” Dec. 26 to Dec. 30, First Baptist Church, Bethlehem.

The musical is based on Disney’s 2000 made-for-television movie “Geppetto,” which was inspired by the 1883 Italian children’s book “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi.

The new musical, which retells the classic Disney story from Geppetto’s perspective, features the classic songs, “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings,” as well as new songs by Oscar and Grammy Award winning composer Stephen Schwartz.

When the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto’s wish to bring his beloved puppet to life, the new father quickly learns that being a parent is full of challenges. He struggles to make his son “the perfect boy,” only to lose him to a gang of roustabouts. It is only when faced with the thought of never seeing Pinocchio again that Geppetto truly learns the joys of being a father and loving his child unconditionally.

Sing for America was started in 2003 by sisters Taryn, Tasia and Teara Gilbert and brothers Jewel and Jorne Gilbert to raise money for local causes, particularly military families in need. Sing for America has raised more than $65,000 for local causes to date. The siblings perform in, direct, choreograph and do costume and set design for their shows.
