Messenlehner, Herman each win three events; Trojans take meet
After having to postpone the yearly rivalry meet against Parkland from Friday to Saturday, Emmaus and Parkland met in the Emmaus Natatorium and the Trojans left with a 103-83 win, handing the Hornet boys team its first East Penn Conference loss of the season.
The meet was filled with plenty of close races and swimmers posting personal best times.
Senior Griffin Messenlehner and junior Roman Herman both had good days, capturing three first-place finishes each.
Messenlehner set a personal best time of 20.95 in the 50-yard freestyle and then returned to set another personal best time in the 100-yard backstroke when he finished in 50.96, winning by 2.40 seconds over Parkland’s Gabe Krizel.
For Herman individual wins came in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley as he also put up personal best times in each of the wins.
To capture the 100 freestyle, Herman finished with a time of 47.90 and in the IM, finished with a time of 1:59.18 and needed just about every bit of his best time to finish just 0.14 ahead of Parkland’s Ethan Coleman to get the win.
Both Messenlehner and Herman were on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won by just over a second. Brady King and Reid Lovett were also members of the relay team for Emmaus.
Messenlehner was also on the 200-yard medley relay team with King, Joe Lyons, and Julian Vlaeminck that finished second just 0.42 seconds behind Parkland’s top team.
Herman set another personal best time swimming the leadoff leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 22.61. Lovett, Lyons, and Vlaeminck were also members of the 200 relay team that finished second with a time of 1:28.81 just 0.10 off the pace set by Parkland.
In the 100-yard butterfly event, posted a personal best time of 52.33 to capture the win there by 0.24 over Parkland’s Tom Price.
In diving, Doug Cornish finished second with a score of 193.80, behind Parkland’s Bradley Kunz, who finished with a score of 251.25.
“I’m really happy with where our kids are,” said Emmaus head coach Tim O’Connor. “They’re swimming the best that they can and they’re listening to what I am trying to teach them. I told them that they swam great today and if anybody is looking to vent, I’ll take it today because you just weren’t as prepared as I needed you to be and I’ll take that.”
Emmaus swimmers will take part in a pair of holiday invitationals, swimming in the Cumberland Valley Invitational on Friday and then taking part in the New Year’s Challenge at Bucknell University on Jan. 4. They return to their dual meet schedule against Easton on Jan. 7.
