Karboski shines in girls loss to Parkland

The Emmaus girls swimming and diving team hosted the yearly rivalry meet with Parkland on Saturday after it was postponed Friday afternoon due to winter weather. The defending district champion Trojans bested the Hornets 104-82.

“The kids always look forward to this meet,” said Emmaus head coach Tim O’Connor. “ I’m happy that we were able to get it in because of the crowd and the number of alumni for both teams that attend the meet. It brings out the best in each team and they’re all very competitive.”

The highlight of the day for Emmaus was the performance of senior Veronica Karboski, who picked up first-place finishes in two individual events and was part of two winning relay teams.

The individual performances came in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events as Karboski posted personal best times in each race.

In the 50 freestyle, Karboski finished with a time of 24.78. She returned in the 100 with a time of 55.61 to finish almost a full second ahead of Parkland’s Farrah Hahn.

Karboski, Keilani Silva, Sophia Harmon, and Sriya Reddy won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.39 to finish 1.49 ahead of Parkland for the top spot. Karboski and Silva teamed with Mabry Krause and Natalie Cheplick on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won its event by 2.84 seconds over Parkland’s top team.

In other individual events, Krause added a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. The sophomore’s time of 59.16 in the backstroke was a personal best for her.

Harmon added a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and Silva took second in the 200-yard individual medley with a personal best time of 2:15.96.

“They’re (Parkland) the district champs and they looked like that again today,” said O’Connor. “There is a lot more work ahead for us, but today I just didn’t have my top ends and my depth ready to go to the level that they had their kids prepare.”

In diving, freshman Maddy Roberts finished fourth with a score of 156.10 and junior Elle Bagley finished fifth posting a 152.20 score.

The team will compete in a pair of holiday invitational events at Cumberland Valley High School and at Bucknell University. Relay teams will take part in the annual Wilson Relays at Wilson West Lawn also. As for league meets, the next dual meet is at home against Easton on Jan. 7.
