Falcons take on new CL teams

Salisbury (4-4 overall, 3-3 Colonial) took on the two new Colonial League teams this past week and started by stretching its winning streak to four straight games with a win over Jim Thorpe (1-5, 1-4).

In their next outing, however, the Falcons dropped a 46-45 decision to Lehighton (6-1, 4-1). From there came the long ride to Bangor (4-2, 4-1) where despite having two players cross the 20-point plateau and the team hitting 10 three-pointers, the Falcons fell to the Slaters 71-60.

Steven Lozada led the Falcons in scoring in the three games, dropping 55 points and leading Salisbury with seven three-pointers. Bryan Gonzalez averaged just under 11 points per game and Drew Petrie contributed 29 points.

Against Jim Thorpe, the defenses ruled the first quarter with the Olympians taking an 8-2 lead. Both offenses came around in the second quarter as Salisbury took a 19-15 lead into halftime and pulled away quickly in the second half thanks in part to outscoring Jim Thorpe19-2 in the final quarter to take a 53-23 victory.

Salisbury was unable to get on top in its game against Lehighton as the Indians stretched a seven-point first-quarter lead to eight at the half. Salisbury came out in the third quarter and cut the lead to 37-31 before mounting a fourth-quarter rally.

Lozada scored seven of his 16 points in the final quarter and the defense held Lehighton to just nine points, but the comeback fell short with the Indians holding on for a 46-45 win.

Joe Roth scored a game-high 18 points and hit two key free throws in the fourth quarter to keep Lehighton in the driver’s seat.

At Bangor, the Falcon defense was unable to contain the Slater offense, which had averaged just 47 points per game coming into Monday night’s game. Offensively, Salisbury also had just four players in the scoring column with Lozada and Gonzalez both scoring 22 points, Petrie finishing with 13 and Josh Holler scoring four points in the game.

Gonzalez hit five three-pointers, Lozada had four and Petrie had one for the Falcons. Bangor’s Michael Bucher led all scorers with 23 points in the game.

The Falcons have two games remaining before Christmas and they are both at home. Tonight, they host Northern Lehigh (2-4, 2-2) and then host Moravian Academy (2-4, 2-3) Friday.
