EHS girls win first seven league games

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team won a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games last week and remained unbeaten in league play.

Last Monday, the Green Hornets defeated Liberty at home 59-40. They finished the week with a 49-42 victory at Dieruff this past Thursday.

“The first few weeks have been a mix of emotions, but I can’t express enough how much fun it is to be a part of this team,” said first-year head coach Avon Mack Jr. “The team is a special group of young women who have all committed to the process and that is evident in the way we have started our season.

“We talk about stacking days and getting better each day to build a foundation that emulates our standards and expectations. We hold one another accountable and we understand no one player is bigger than the ultimate goal.”

In the win over the Hurricanes, Emmaus jumped on top early to lead 18-4 after the opening quarter and never looked back.

Gabby DeVita led all scorers with 18 points in a balanced scoring attack for the Hornets. Olive Whitney tallied nine points. Sylvia Sokolofski recorded eight points and both Sofie Laird and Cassie Doemling finished with seven points. Emma Naccarato contributed six points and Kayla Snyder rounded out the scoring with four points.

Against the Huskies, the Hornets started fast and led 16-9 after the first quarter. They outscored Dieruff in each of the next two quarters to hold on for the win. Snyder and Laird both led the attack with 12 points, while DeVita and Sokolofski each added nine points.

“I believe the girls have played as a unit,” Mack Jr. said. “They are coachable and understand the feedback is aimed at helping them become the best player they can be. We have learned from our mistakes, while taking the wins in stride. We know our EPC games count double so we play with a sense of urgency at all times.”

Emmaus, which improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the EPC, will play in the annual Easton Rotary Holiday Tournament this weekend at Easton Middle School. The Hornets’ first game will be against Phillipsburg on Friday afternoon.

“Going forward is simple in my opinion: emulate the standard we have set,” said Mack Jr. “If we take it one day at a time, one practice at a time, one quarter at a time and one game at a time, I believe we can position ourselves to do something special this season.”
