Cheplick helps girls swimmers to win over ACC
Emmaus pushed its East Penn Conference record to 2-0 on the season and its overall record to 2-3 with a 104-63 win over Allentown Central Catholic recently.
Senior Natalie Cheplick led Emmaus swimmers with 12 points in the meet as she finished first and set season best times in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly events. Cheplick swam the backstroke in 1:07.11 and finished the butterfly in 1:05.55.
In addition to her individual accomplishments, Cheplick teamed with Kate Brion, Veronica Karbosky and Mabry Krause on the 400-yard freestyle relay team, which swam the event as an exhibition entry, but finished with the top time of 3:56.47.
Karboski is also a senior and along with junior Gabriella Antunes scored 10 team points for the Hornets. Karboski had a first-place finish, along with Maddy Roberts, Sriya Reddy, and Liz Mazzetti, as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished with the top time of 1:46.94, 7.55 seconds ahead of the second place team from Central Catholic. Karboski had a comfortable 6.40-second edge in the 200-yard freestyle individual event to take the top spot there.
Antunes swam two individual events with a win in the 100-yard freestyle and a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke even though she posted a personal best time of 1:11.88, leaving her behind Cheplick.
Mazzetti turned in two times that were personal bests for her, but like Antunes, was unable to get the top spot. Her 26.94 in the 50-yard freestyle left her 01.28 behind teammate Krause and she was just 00.46 behind Antunes in the 100-yard freestyle.
A pair of freshman swimmers also found success against the Vikettes (1-2 overall, 1-1 EPC). Reddy was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that won its event. Before that she won the 200-yard medley relay team. That event had Reddy with Cheplick and Antunes and fellow freshman Keilani Silva.
With little time to rest, Reddy came back to win the 200-yard IM by nine seconds over a competitor from Central Catholic. Fellow freshman Silva also swam the 100-yard breaststroke as an exhibition, finishing with the second best time in the event at 1:16.84.
Silva teamed with Roberts, Antunes, and Ella Shucavage in the 400-yard freestyle relay as an exhibition and also finished second. Perhaps her most impressive showing in the meet came in the 500-yard freestyle where she won by 35.44, finishing with a time of 5:20.49 for Emmaus.
In diving, Emmaus’ Elle Bagley took the top spot with a score of 156.10, edging out the Vikettes’ Alyssa Stahlnecker by 0.6 points. Roberts, who competes in both diving and swimming, finished fourth with a score of 141.85 for the Hornets.
Emmaus swims against rival Parkland (4-0, 2-0) at home on Friday before competing in the Cumberland Valley Holiday Invitational on Dec. 17 and opening 2025 in the New Year’s Challenge at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
